The Common Criteria project was initiated to harmonise the ITSEC,
CTCPEC (Canadian criteria) and US Federal Criteria (FC) into a Common Criteria for
Information Technology Security Evaluation (CC) for use in evaluating products and systems
and for stating security requirements in a standardised way. Its aim is to replace
national and regional criteria with a worldwide set acceptable to the International
Standards Organisation.
Government agencies from Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and
the United States sponsor the project. Version 1.0 was published on 31st January 1996 and
following trials and comments, Version 2.0 (final draft) was published in December 1997.
